How common is trauma?
Often we think of trauma in terms of big events: a war, a hurricane, or a terrorist attack. But people can be traumatized in many different ways; a car accident, physical or sexual assault, seeing someone killed or injured, receiving harsh punishment as a child can all have a lasting impact. Trauma is any event that has a lasting negative effect, anything that causes the loss of peace of mind. Many events can produce a trauma response including the loss of a job or the loss of a loved one. Many jobs involve regular exposure to trauma (e.g. firefighters, police officers, and emergency service workers.)
Do your feelings flare up with an intensity you don't understand?
Do you have recurring nightmares?
Do you feel empty, sad, or unmotivated?
Can a seemingly benign action, a gentle touch perhaps, set off an intense response?
Do you avoid things that remind you of certain events?
Do you feel numb or detached?
Are you burdened with guilty thoughts?
Do you feel like your future has shrunk?
Do you want your peace of mind back?
Maybe you thought time would take care of your problem. Maybe you feel that you're a strong person who shouldn't need help.
